Train Systems Engineer

Under the direction of the lead engineer, position will be part of organization and project team involved in the renovation of rail-transit vehicles The Train System Engineer will focus on defining, developing and validating all systems of a rail vehicle


Accountable for the delivery of all Electrical System Engineering outputs in compliance with the engineering QCD commitment, by contributing in significant ways and by managing assigned project engineering resources
Derives the system and subsystem functional requirements to create technical specifications Consistently reviews and manages the requirements, specifications and interfaces As well, the Train System Engineer manages technical relationships with internal/external suppliers throughout the vehicle development cycle
Defines the global train system architecture, operational modes and functionalities taking as input the external/internal requirements
Determines the transverse requirements (EMC, acoustics, reliability, aerodynamics, weight, etc) for the various train subsystems in close collaboration with the Train Design Engineer (lead Mechanical Engineer), Traction System Engineer and RAMS Engineer
Coordinates the multitude of system designs to a cohesive system-of-system that ensures the complete integration will comply with the customer specifications, applicable standards and implicit/explicit requirements
Manages tradeoffs and interfaces between subsystems
Collaborates with all engineering mtiers to detail and describe how related functions/performances are to be checked Will be responsible for submitting these
Reviews the validation procedures and reports for components and subsystems written by Alstoms Requirements & Test Engineer
Position requires understanding and knowledge of a wide range of electronic/ electrical systems, from discrete electronic devices up to large power distribution and control devices
Leads the electrical design including train electrical schematics and wiring
Calculate/simulate and verify tractive and braking effort, plus brake blending, required to meet customer requirements, in addition to reviewing thermal analysis of the propulsion and friction braking systems based on agreed variables
Work with lead mechanical and project engineering manager to calculate and verify safe braking distances required by customer
Participates in technical and program gate reviews, by providing input and any follow-up actions, to ensure development follows company and/or customer design process
Interface with internal and external groups to prepare materials and equipment purchase specifications based on given technical specification
Prepare reports and studies that present technical information in a clear and concise manner that meet client requirements and formats
Perform independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations and drawing preparation
Conduct diagnostic investigations by analyzing data with support from Alstom Transport Engineering, implementing and verifying fixes

Participate in testing and validation of new and existing designs and equipment
Mentor less experienced engineers in creation of design concepts and documentation, development and testing
Investigating, trouble-shoot and resolve a wide variety of electrical, electromechanical and system engineering issues
Provide shop support and production problem resolution
Fully support internal groups, including Sourcing, Purchasing, Quality and Bids/Tenders
Provide support of cost saving activities as requested by Project Engineering Manager
Provide timely communication on significant issues or developments


An EE, EET, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics (or similar engineering discipline) degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program is required


10 or more years of experience related experience
Demonstrated and successful experience in designing, developing, testing and deploying complex hardware and software systems for application on heavy vehicle systems with multifaceted integration (ie locomotive, mining equipment, military vehicles)
Experience with development and validation testing of vehicle drive systems
Thorough knowledge of AC and DC electric motor theory of design and control, including commutated, synchronous and asynchronous motors
Experience must include the selection of equipment, materials, control philosophy, and the preparation and assembling of calculations and specifications
Experience is required with electrical system design including medium and low voltage distribution systems (transformers, generators and motors), communication systems, equipment selection, and analytical calculations
Circuit design and analysis using National Instruments Multisim or similar circuit simulators (SPICE)
Experience designing and developing systems susceptible to interruption caused by EMI/EMC
Experience designing and developing systems susceptible to interruption caused by periodic high voltage transients, sags and surges
Experience with various interface protocols over serial communications and wired/wireless Ethernet (such as TCP/IP, RS232, RS422, RS485, SAE J1587/J1708, SAE J1939, Controller Area Network (CAN bus))


Strong knowledge of SolidWorks Electrical, Electrical 3D, 2D/3D modeling and AutoCAD (or similar 2D design environments)
Strong knowledge of Matlab and Simulink
Working skills in Microsoft Suite Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Visio
Excellent written and oral communication skills
