Provides leadership, supervision and technical oversight of operations and maintenance activities in the test facilities at NASA Ames Research Center

B DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Maintenance and Operations Supervisor

1 Supervises engineers, technicians and union employees, including work assignments, monitoring and approving time charging, hiring/firing, award and disciplinary actions and mentoring employees

2 Supports operation and maintenance of the arc-jet facilities, steam plant, Steam Vacuum System (SVS), Electric Arc Shock Tube (EAST) and ballistic test ranges

3 Develops or reviews plans, requirements and drawings for implementing repairs, upgrades and modifications of the facility equipment, infrastructure, instrumentation and control systems

4 Use the MAXIMO system to schedule preventative maintenance, develop and modify PM instructions, add missing or new equipment to the MAXIMO database

5 Provides technical expertise to the users of the facilities for test planning to insure proper match of facility requirements with capabilities, resources and schedule

6 Provides technical expertise and guidance in overall planning, maintenance, and operation of assigned facilities

7 Prepares documentation supporting facility development efforts

8 Prepares specifications and purchase requisitions for facility hardware


Providing support and leadership in the planning, preparation, and operation of the test facilities to ensure that project test requirements are met on schedule and within the budgeted resources


Works under the general guidance of the Branch Manager Responsible for supervising employees and executing projects within approved work plans and resources

Unusual or Special Physical Requirements of Position Visual and physical contact with test system hardware and installed test articles Multiple workstation assignments (office, test facility, control room, laboratory, shops, etc) Transportation of notebooks, drawings, forms, sensors, etc required Ability to hear normal conversation One eye (minimum) correctable to 20/20 Ability to distinguish eight colors on basic panel displays and wiring Ability to manipulate small and delicate instruments and wiring

Description of Work Environment Work is accomplished in an office, control room, in and around test facility buildings, and within facility test chambers Transportation is required between these work areas as well as trips to the client or users facility Must be able to use respiratory protection in confined spaces Some work areas are high in noise

Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks Office and control room equipment includes computers, calculators, electronic instruments, mechanical instruments, and miscellaneous precision measuring devices

Criticality of Attendance Normal work hours in the day shift with occasion overtime Hiring organization works a compressed schedule with 9 hour days and every other Friday off Work hours are 630 am to 400 pm Testing may occur any day or time of day, depending on the schedule and test requirements Regular daily attendance is required to maintain team effectiveness

Other Essential Functions Provides technical supervision to assigned project personnel and assists management on administrative matters Must be able to obtain a NASA badge, gain access to the facilities, and pass a Security Clearance if required by the employer


General knowledge and understanding of aerospace testing and facility operations Understanding of mechanical test systems involving hydraulics, high pressure, high vacuum, pneumatics, fluid mechanics, fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, and mechanical design Understanding of electronic test systems involving data acquisition, sensors, and signal conditioning Understanding of materials and state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, and experience with SolidWorks or other CAD software and MAXIMO software

Knowledge of high pressure & instrument air systems, lifting devices, reverse osmosis (RO) plant operations and maintenance, machine tool maintenance, Compressors, Facility Instrumentation (Sensors, Bentley Nevada), NDE of pipes and tube trailers, LN2 systems, 2000 hp pump maintenance (oil analysis), pressure gauges and relief valves (recertification)

Requires, as a minimum, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (eg Mechanical, Aerospace, Structural, Civil, etc) and five years applicable experience PE license in mechanical, structural or civil engineering desirable In lieu of an engineering degree 15 years of applicable experience may be substituted

Experience with industrial steam boilers or steam power plants is desirable Knowledge of ballistic range operations, firearms and explosives handling is also desirable
