Background

A first line management position is available at the IBM Manchester Lab, located in Manchester City Centre The team at this location has a proud history of successful storage system development, taking a leading role in bringing the Storwize V3700 and V5000 models to market Currently the team is responsible for the award winning range of Spectrum Virtualize storage software and devices (Storwize V7000, V5000, Spectrum Virtualize (SAN Volume Controller) and Flashsystem V9000 & 9100) These products combine many leading edge technologies (including Linux, virtualisation, real time, highly available, highly reliable clustering, automatic management of storage tiering based on Analytic Analysis and Artificial Intelligence, Fibre Channel, Fibre Channel over Ethernet, iSCSI, NVME, Flash technology to name but a few) to deliver highly reliable storage services to many thousands of customers worldwide

What the Role Involves

Our people managers work in a technical environment alongside their engineering teams and have a high level of technical understanding They get involved in helping their teams with every step of the product life-cycle from requirements gathering with sponsor users all the way through development and field support If you join us, youll be working with a dedicated group of engineers focused on ensuring our customers are delighted with our innovative solutions to their complex problems Your role as a manager will be to monitor, assist and guide your teams to develop, test and maintain critical features of our storage products, with a focus on continual improvement and product robustness and quality This sits naturally alongside the people management side of the role, which requires someone who is passionate about helping our engineers achieve their career goals As a globally integrated agile team opportunities frequently arise to work directly with IBM sales/account teams and customers, both in the Lab and on customer sites locally and internationally This helps us better understand the needs of our clients and increase our competitive advantage
We are looking for a capable, clear thinking, passionate and motivated individual, who wants to work in a highly technical environment and who wants to manage a highly skilled team of engineers Direct experience of developing software, although useful, is not essential Likewise, direct first line management experience is desirable, but not essential Education and support is available to allow new managers to develop the appropriate technical and non-technical skills

The responsibilities of the job include First line people management of software engineers within the team including performance reviews, salary reviews, career discussions etc
Technical management of agile development teams and their deliverables ensuring that new function is delivered on time and with quality, whilst maintaining current function and supporting our customer base
Working with teams on their backlog, prioritising their work alongside the team and their stakeholders
Liaising with other locations & teams in our worldwide development organisation, working on joint projects
Communication at the executive level on the status of the development being done in Manchester
Possible advocacy opportunities to work directly with our storage customers
Helping with lab events both social and lab/storage related
Working with the Lab Leader to promote the lab, both internally within IBM and externally
Improving the environment of the lab and working on process improvement for our storage deliverables

Required Professional and Technical Expertise
* A minimum of 21 honours degree (or equivalent), or a postgraduate qualification in any discipline
* Passion for mentoring and coaching engineers, helping them achieve their career goals
* Passion for technology and developing future products and features
* Demonstrated track record of problem solving, clear thinking
* Excellent teamwork, knowledge sharing and communication skills
* Demonstrated ability to work in a successful team, delivering complex products to an agreed schedule

Preferred Professional and Technical Expertise
* Experience working as a software engineer within a development team, or experience of working on a complex technical project in a non-computing environment
* Experience of first line people management
* Experience of at least basic programming in a high level language, or a scripting language would be advantageous
* Familiarity with modern development and build toolsets such as Jenkins, GIT, RTC
* Knowledge of the administration tasks used in various Operating Systems would be advantageous
* Experience with networking and SAN specific technologies would be helpful, but it is expected that most candidates will not have this particular skill and education in these area is normally provided to new joiners
