Job Description:

As the successful candidate you will join a team of professional service engineers responsible for engineering, deploying, maintaining and supporting the BlackBerry production environment You will manage multiple cloud and regional, heterogeneous environments around the globe, comprised of thousands of systems running predominantly Linux and some Windows operating systems



Engineer BlackBerry services to work in a highly available and disaster-resilient global fashion
Develop automation for processes and tools that will be used to improve deployment steps, upgrades, patching/imaging, management and monitoring functions
Collaborate with product and development teams, to evolve and improve software and services
Use outside-of-the-box thinking to generate creative solutions to problems
Analyze multiple solutions and select the best one for recommendation
Troubleshoot and identify bugs in partnership with development and testing teams
Develop tools and engineer 3rd party software to support the BlackBerry services
System performance management and tuning
Validate that production behavior and performance aligns with test results


Deployment and upgrades of BlackBerry services; coordinating the arrangements for the supporting platform and infrastructure; configuration of the services
Create and review methods of procedure (MOPs) that specify the steps and commands to run; create implementation plans that organize work across multiple teams
Adhere to defined Change, Incident, and Problem Management policies designed to manage risk and improve availability amidst services and technologies evolving at a fast pace
Standardize production and lab systems to make deployments and troubleshooting easier
Communicate status and results to key internal stakeholders
Advise on capacity planning and management
Build and deploy brand new services; migrating services between sites
Continuously work with development, networking, and security teams to improve security posture and eliminate vulnerabilities


Troubleshoot and resolve incidents affecting both production and non-production environments; prevent incidents from recurring through knowledge sharing, documentation, and improvements Contribute to root cause analysis
React quickly to problems and follow established procedures to implement solutions
Create and maintain support information, such as procedure instructions and process updates
Assess service quality and identify opportunities for improvement
Share knowledge with other BlackBerry employees, formally and informally
Contribute to incident impact calculations to help determine the true impact to customers


Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Systems Administration, or a related discipline
Three to five years of experience in Service Provider, IT Administration, or Network Operations settings
Strong Linux/Unix administration
Deploying and maintaining standard Internet services (eg Apache, Tomcat, JBoss middleware), DNS services (eg bind), and protocols (eg HTTP, SSL)
Scripting and/or programming experience in bash, awk, sed, Perl, shell, XML, Python, Ruby
Experience with automation using scripts, version control (eg Git, SVN) and configuration management (eg Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Jenkins)
Virtualization, Cloud Computing (eg KVM, VMware, OpenNebula), PaaS support and configuration
Application network configuration (configuring and troubleshooting routes, VNets, subnets)
Participation in an on-call rotation; operate effectively in a global 24x7 environment
Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
High initiative and motivation to make a positive difference Ability to work effectively independently, and to support multiple services as part of a team
A natural aptitude for knowledge sharing
Sharp in support and troubleshooting of applications and services, including analysis of logging and monitoring data
Ability to learn new technologies quickly with some support and guidance
Strong individual time management and organization skills Basic project management skills
Handling pressure and urgent situations with a level-headed approach and high professionalism


Data storage products (eg Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Cassandra) Hadoop NAS/SAN solutions
Programming languages (Java, Ruby, C, C )
Experience with Container platforms (eg Docker, OpenShift, Kubernetes)
Certifications such as LFCS/LFCE from Linux Foundation, LPI, RedHat or SuSE
Enterprise-class monitoring tools
Application load balancing and dynamic/intelligent DNS
Scrum and Kanban methodologies
ITIL experience
