Job Description:

At AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, we have two exciting opportunities for you to join the Discovery Sciences R&D organization as a Senior Research Scientist In both positions you will support projects in all phases of AstraZenecas drug discovery pipeline (1) in the Discovery Biology Departments Cellular Assays Team developing cell-based screening assays; (2) in the Mechanistic Biology & Profiling Department characterizing molecules and profiling biochemical and cellular functional responses You will work together and with existing team members towards a detailed understanding of the mechanism-of-action of investigated molecules You will play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients lives

Specifically, the successful candidates will take leading scientific roles in exploring protein degradation biology and applying their skills to identify, characterize and progress new Proteolysis Targeting Chimera (PROTAC)-based medicines In doing so you demonstrate a passion for driving scientific questions, combined with strong team working ethics, to drug discovery projects You will join these teams whose remits are to support our drug discovery projects globally with assay development, early DMPK assessment, SAR profiling and detailed mechanism of action data

Main Duties and Responsibilities
SRS Discovery Biology

Lab-based scientist utilizing expertise in protein degradation biology for cellular assay development; independently designing, developing and validating assays for implementation in drug discovery projects

Innovate in the field of cellular assay development and cellular mechanism-of-action

SRS Mechanistic Biology & Profiling

Lab-based scientist providing analytical characterization of beyond rule of 5 molecules combined with functional profiling of compound induced cellular degradation

Deliver high quality analytical chemistry data alongside profiling of cellular responses to build a detailed understanding of the relation between compound integrity, bioavailability, and observed pharmacology

For both positions Design and implement work-plans to agreed timelines to meet project objectives, including delivery of more than one agreed area of work in parallel

Be an effective member of Drug Discovery Project Teams, contributing novel ideas and using judgment and knowledge to influence the work of the project

Maintain an awareness of current developments in the literature and contribute to the continuous capability enhancement process by identifying opportunities in the workplace where improvements can be made

Achieve personal scientific visibility through project contributions and internal presentations at departmental or functional meetings; and external scientific visibility through poster and oral conference presentations and authorship on peer-reviewed publications

Essential Requirements
PhD in Biology, Pharmacology, Cell biology or a related discipline or a BSc/MSc degree with significant relevant experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry

Strong experience in molecular and cellular biology techniques applied to development of physiologically relevant cellular assays together with expertise in the design, development and validation of cellular assays for compound profiling and screening applications and mechanism of action studies

Extensive expertise in immunofluorescence techniques including confocal and non-confocal high-content imaging as well as image acquisition and analysis

Documented expertise in quantitative assessments of intracellular protein levels, preferably using multiple techniques and including protein turnover

A practical understanding of a wide range of multi-well plate-based cellular assay methods and technologies (eg, fluorescence, luminescence, target engagement techniques, plate-based automation) as applied to a range of biological targets

Scientific visibility and leadership through project contributions and external publications

Excellent communication skills and an ability to operate effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment

First-rate decision-making skills, coupled with tenacity to see decisions through, even in situations of ambiguity

Desirable Requirements
Expertise in protein degradation biology; ideally E3 ligases and with proven experience on development of model systems and assays capable of identifying therapeutic molecules that exploit endogenous cellular mechanisms of protein degradation

Strong experience in mechanistic pharmacology, and ideally an understanding of how to explore poly-pharmacology principles and complex pharmacology studies to understand compound mechanism of action

Expertise in a range of cell biology techniques, to include cloning, transfection methods, gene expression knock-down (RNAi or other) and endogenous gene tagging

Extensive hands on experience in protein MassSpec methodologies, from sample preparation through to analysis

Excellent problem-solving skills, strong delivery focus and communication skills, as well as team working and networking skills
