Velocity Technology Solutions is expanding and adding an experienced Senior Linux Administrator to join our dynamic and highly successful team We are currently interviewing for an experienced Senior Linux Administrator for our Global Infrastructure team Velocity offers Cloud services across public, private and hybrid cloud environments, and is an Advanced AWS partner

Key senior contributor to fast paced and dynamic global team, providing Linux engineering support for a leading cloud applications provider Responsibilities include administering servers (LINUX/UNIX), deploying hypervisors (OVM/ Xen), managing backup infrastructure (on-line, to tape, and replication), and supporting various SAN systems and technologies This position will work closely with Oracle DBAs and interact with both Velocity and customer management teams This position will provide end-user support while engaging in installation, problem determination, and troubleshooting tasks This role will assist in defining best practices and procedures for efficient and secure administration across public, private, and hybrid cloud environments

This individual must be able to independently manage their work, create and maintain relevant technical documentation, effectively troubleshoot complex systems, and mentor junior staff Due to system uptime requirements this individual can expect to work some overtime and be on call during holidays and weekends on a rotational basis


Plan, install, and maintain Linux/Unix systems for production and non-production ERP environments
Configuration, patching, upgrades, maintenance, and troubleshooting of hardware, operating system, storage, software, and utilities
Coordinate the design and operation of highly available, mission critical server infrastructure in a service provider environment
Develop detailed server standards and associated documentation, including diagrams and work instructions
Develop detailed server project and test plans
Act as level 2/3 support for server/compute operations and intermediate engineers
Independently complete assigned tasks and projects on time to meet project milestones and deadlines
Stay informed of current best practices as they relate to services being provided
Effectively participate and collaborate with cross-functional teams including project managers, server and applications engineers, and customer IT teams
Write and review Root Cause Analysis reports, including preventative actions, ensuring accuracy and completeness for presentation to customers
Identify and recommend possible improvements related to work processes and tools
Mentor and support Service Desk staff, and, maintain a healthy, professional work relationship with the other IT functional areas and team members
Conduct system performance tuning, and proactively improve uptime and response times
Proactive capacity planning and resource management; data trending, statistical analysis, data archiving/purge management, and resource utilization monitoring
Maintain fault-tolerant, high-availability, and Disaster Recovery solutions - 24x7 system uptime; Manage backup/recovery strategy to ensure system recoverability
Enforce system security policies in compliance with SOX/SOC/ISO guidelines, government regulations, and consumer privacy standards/best practices
Document, maintain and improve processes in alignment with best practices incident reporting/resolution, troubleshooting, change management
Display confidence and provide outstanding value-add service while working with customers
Excellent team player, able to manage and prioritize your work, and be prepared to put in long hours on occasion to keep things working at a very high technical standard
Candidate must ensure that compliance with data protection legislation under the DPA, EU GDPR, any other applicable data protection legislation

Job Requirements

Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience
7 Years LINUX System Administration (Level 3 Cert) in large environments (1000 servers)
5 years supporting Virtualization Technologies including Oracle Virtual Server Experience with large Linux clusters
5 years supporting Enterprise Storage Systems
Solid understanding of logical, physical, functional, operational, and technical Enterprise architectures
24x7 production support in fast-paced environments
Enterprise backup/restore (deduplication, compression, near-line)
Solid documentation experience
Self-motivated, analytical, thorough, and detail oriented
Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities
Ability to independently diagnose and resolve complex technical issues
Outstanding customer service
Strong written and verbal communication - Exceptional technical writing


Virtualization experience, specifically with Oracle Virtual server (Xen based) and VMWare
ITIL foundation certification is a plus, familiarity is a requirement
Able to effectively present complex information to a wide variety of audiences
Enterprise source control (Subversion, Alienbrain, Perforce, GIT, etc)
Enterprise configuration management solutions
Enterprise monitoring
Project Management
Advanced knowledge of enterprise UNIX and Linux operating systems
Strong Kernel performance tuning, primarily on the Oracle Database Tier; Strong shell scripting
Strong conceptual understanding and technical knowledge of SAN (iSCSI Fiber-channel, Infiniband), NAS, and Clustering technologies
Strong initiative with superior analytical, diagnostic, and troubleshooting skills - Ability to quickly identify and resolve performance issues using a variety of tools
Strong organization and time-management skills with a Can do attitude -
Ability to multitask and be comfortable with changing priorities
Excellent working knowledge of hosting industry and data center best practices
