The Head of Clinical Engagement and Policy has a tripartite set of accountabilities/responsibilities The incumbent

Supports and promotes company-wide clinical strategy that applies to clinical activities and has accountability for the policies that support those global strategies for all pipeline and marketed products
Develops and supports cohesive cross-enterprise community of clinicians/physicians within clinical development, patient safety, medial affairs and global AZ marketing companies with the goal of increasing engagement/growth, consistency of corporate interaction and physician development
Has accountability for clinical engagement with external academic, patient-focused, government and non-governmental organizations
The Head may serve as the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for AZ when asked to be the delegate for the CMO

Typical Accountabilities

Deputy to Chief Medical Officer
Serve in capacity of CMO when CMO is unavailable including responsibility for benefitrisk assessment for pipeline and licensed products
Contribute to the overall strategy and direction of the Chief Medical Office by working as a member of the Leadership Team and in collaboration with other functions
Develop and support a community of clinicians and clinical scientists across all AZ functions including physicians deployed in early-stage and late-stage clinical development, patient safety, medical affairs and AZ international marketing companies
Develop strategy and support policies including global recruitment strategies, career tracks, job leveling, as well as best practices for trial design and interpretation, continuous improvement and engagement in innovative clinical methodology
Represents CMO on ORDU or BRDU leadership team and specialty DMCs depending on expertise
Head of Clinical Policy
Responsible for insuring AZ processes and procedures are aligned with highest ethical and scientific standards for the conduct of clinical trials in patients
Responsible for company-wide clinical trial transparency assuring the approach appropriately balances the needs of patients, governmental, non-governmental and AZ stakeholders
Sponsors, support, and/or implements policies on informed consent, data privacy and protection, human tissue storage and use, and emerging topics associated with clinical study execution and analysis In some cases, the processes and policies may be managed by other organizations within AZ so influencing multiple functions of the organization at different levels will be required
Drives a network of interested parties across AZ with patient engagement activities to ensure minimal duplication, optimal sharing, and identification of gaps
Clinical Engagement In collaboration with the CMO, Head of Regulatory Excellence, and Corporate Affairs, manage industry wide external relationships related to clinical policy (including IMI, Pharma/CMO, etc) and patient participation in clinical trials, including representing AZ at appropriate and prioritized industry and other fora focused on driving innovation in clinical trials and insuring adherence of industry sponsored trials to global regulatory and ethical standards
Represent AZ clinical policy approaches and positions with international organizations (eg WHO, GAVI), global governmental organizations (eg USA/HHS/CDC, EU/IMI), academic and non-profit sector (eg BMGF)
Sponsors, supports, and/or implements policies to facilitate and increase engagement with patients, patient organizations, caregivers and health care providers especially as it pertains to the clinical evaluation of new medicines In some cases, the processes and policies may be managed by other organizations within AZ but with the knowledge and support of this office


At least 10 years of clinical research experience in pharmaceutical/biotech industry Experience Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 studies
Knowledge of global licensure requirements
Knowledge of patient related/ethical regulations and current trends in patient engagement

Physician-Scientist with MD or equivalent degree
Innovative strategist that can develop a new vision and influence engagement across a large and complex community
Demonstrated ability to lead a cross functional team with multiple collaborations
A strong candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills to navigate the many groups that deal with patient activities, determine where central coordination will be most useful, and provide subject matter expertise and consistency where activities are conducted in other groups
Demonstrated ability to operate in areas of ambiguity with disparate stakeholders


Prior experience with patient organizations
Oncology clinical experience
Experience interacting with international, governmental, academic and non-profit organizations vis--vis clinical development activities and approaches
