Job profile summary The biological sciences are strategically meaningful, growing in capability, and possibly disruptive to BPs business model We have established a Bioscience Center (BSC) to maintain critical mass in biosciences capability, perfect current opportunities and assess opportunities across the range of BPs businesses The Center stays closely connected to BP businesses and external technologies, and ensures the expertise required to progress opportunities through the early stages of technology development and to advise businesses on biological issues and partnership opportunities The Center operates similarly to a start-up company, requiring a team made up of flexible, multi-skilled, innovative members that can work collaboratively across the research portfolio

The Research Associate will design and deliver the experimental and analytical results of the research agenda in collaboration with the BSC Team members

The Research Associate will design and conduct the research programs that will support the Bioscience Center objectives, requiring a collaborative working style and broad range of experiences in particular, appropriate experience with chemistry, fermentation, analytical methods, and biochemistry is desired

The individual will join a group of interactive scientists and should have strong interpersonal skills and proven outstanding inter-disciplinary problem solving and scientific analytical skills, with a strong interest in the pursuit of scientific discovery This position requires hands-on work at the bench in the Centers laboratory and/or at partner facilities with a recent history of delivering experimental results

Design and conduct experiments that deliver results for the research portfolio of the Center

Strong promotion and adherence to HSSE initiatives and compliance with BPs Code of Conduct

Essential education Bachelors degree (biochemistry, analytical chemistry, molecular biology, biology, chemistry or related fields)

Essential experience and job requirements 2 5 years experience with a broad understanding of microbiology, biochemistry and analytical chemistry principles
Hands-on experience with fermentation, instrumental analysis, chemistry, microbiology and biochemistry techniques
Demonstrated background in setting up and maintaining experimental equipment, operating equipment safely, and following standard operating procedures
Broad experience in set-up and execution of experiments (organic chemistry, fermentation, analytical and heterogeneous chemistry) along with data collection, analysis and documentation of the relevant laboratory results
Ability to commit to continuous improvement and to progress work
Ability to prioritize responsibilities, show flexibility in response to changed priorities and work effectively in a multi-tasking and matrix environment
Strong organizational skills, ability to multitask and handle multiple projects at the same time
Ability to work safely and independently with no immediate supervision Adept at formulating new SOPs as well as reliable and accurate execution of tasks following SOPs outlined by others
Basic knowledge of statistical experimental design practices, data analysis, troubleshooting and literature search capabilities
Ability to learn quickly acquire new skills and develop expertise in new areas of scientific interest to the BSC

Desired criteria Experience in laboratory fermentation workstations, small scale propagations and fermentations and scale up
Experience in classical organic chemistry and experiment execution, inorganic heterogeneous chemical reactions and high-pressure, hydrogenation reactions
Experience in analytical chemistry techniques including NIR
Experience in laboratory automation workstations
Experience recording results in a digital LIMS and maintaining a digital notebook
