Project Brief

The Centre for Environmental Health is a joint initiative of the Public Health Foundation of India and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai), and has been established with generous support from Tata Sons and Tata Consultancy Services Environmental Health is an area of growing interest for PHFI, with our work in the space expanding over the past few years to address issues related to air pollution, climate change, pesticide use, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), while the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has been in the forefront of studying the social, economic and environmental determinants of health This collaborative effort aims to set up this much-needed platform in India for dedicated and high quality research and capacity building in the area of environmental health

In addition to a portfolio of research in areas such as air pollution, WASH, chemical exposures and climate change, the Centre will offer a platform for young researchers to carry out work in Environmental Health, through a series of capacity building initiatives such as fellowships, pilot grants and exchange programmes The Centre will also establish a policy engagement platform, with regular meetings with government, civil society, academia and the private sector, to develop pathways to implementation Through this broad array of activities, the Centre will aim to catalyse environmental health research in India, with the ultimate aim of influencing evidence-informed policy making across sectors

Objectives of the Centre-

- With the overall goal of building capacity, promoting research, advocacy and communication on environmental health, the specific objectives of this Centre would be to

- Conduct policy-relevant research across a range of environmental health issues in India

- Undertake activities aimed at building institutional capacity on and action research for environmental health

- Establish programs for education and training in environmental health for public health practitioners, community groups and local volunteers

- Cultivate a network of partners and collaborators to engage in multi-sectoral, cross-cultural action research, basic research and policy advocacy

- Promote evidence informed policy-making for public health

- Engage the public and health professionals through the media and health communication activities

Deliverables

- Conduct analysis and support other researchers analysing data sets held by the CEH team, using a range of statistical techniques including multilevel modelling and spatial statistics

- Work closely with other team members and collaborators on papers or grant applications linked to these analyses

- Contribute to the development and management of data sets which link spatial data to data on individuals

- Liaise with collaborators both working in the unit and in other organisations

- Present results at scientific and non-technical meetings to colleagues and peers

- Write up research for publication in peer reviewed academic journals and reports aimed at audience of varying levels of expertise

- Undertake other reasonable duties that may be required from time to time

- Liaise with Government, Private Sector, and Civil Society Stakeholders

- Any other task assigned by the Supervisor
