Why this role matters

The purpose of this role is to deliver end-to-end physical network designs to support the NGA (Next Generation Access) network rollout and to develop & test new FTTx (Fibre to the x) physical infrastructure solutions from within the Access Network Platform The role holder will be responsible for making technical recommendations to internal stakeholders to improve technical solutions, components and processes as well as owning the design and design validation of specific projects to underpin the Openreach network and products/services

This is an essential role for Openreach to deliver leading edge technological developments into the network to underpin our Big Bold Plan

You will be part of a team developing solutions to extract as much value from our network assets as possible This will include maximising coverage and making a material impact to strategic business cases Using state of the art methodologies, network data and engineering skills, the team will play a key part in delivering a world class service over copper & fibre infrastructure

What youll be doing

Working with Access platform team and technology vendors to design, develop and test new FTTx components to optimise costs, complexity and scalability of any new kit
Driving efficiency and scalability of any new solutions by working with stakeholders to ensure solutions are fit for purpose
Working with Architecture, Network Design, Engineering and Systems teams to deliver rapid assurance testing & product approval
Accountable for design and development of discreet, self-contained projects with understanding of how the work impacts wider programme
Providing technical support to internal stakeholders and clients regarding aspects of future platform and/or customer solutions
Point of contact for technical expertise to project stakeholders, internal and external
Mentoring and sharing knowledge with others

Role specific responsibilities

Working with a matrix team for creation of network designs focussing on physical aspects of NGA platform components
Delivering and designing new network features / components in line with the specific networks strategy or roadmap Complexity of work may vary and can be related to technical domain, stakeholders or breadth of product portfolio
Deciding on the network design/feature/ component of the network platform or customer solution
Down streaming physical network designs and network planning rules to in-life planning policy teams
Down streaming physical network designs and equipment installation procedures to in-life engineering teams and network delivery teams
Resolving in-life issues to overall network platform and/or customer solution, as appropriate
Specifying physical design requirements to equipment vendors via RFIs, SoRs or Change requests
Analysing complex technical issues and resolving issues with vendors and other designers
Providing inputs into delivery plans supported by adequate documentation
Making technical recommendations to internal stakeholders
Improving technical solutions, components and processes

Essential skills

Previous experience in an engineering role with a technical background
Understanding of FTTx topology, components and Fixed Line Access networks
Excellent communication and presentation skills, including ability to explain complex issues with clarity to non-specialists
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment
Good working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Word and Excel

Desirable skills

Understanding of test & development of fibre and copper cables, fibre optics plant, and active NGA components (eg NGA street cabinets, NGA Exchange based head ends)
Degree in Electrical, Electronics or Mechanical engineering or equivalent qualification

Experience you would be expected to have

Engineering experience to include practical problem solving, detailed design and the ability to develop ideas through to down streaming solutions
Ability to drive projects through to completion from ideas through to implementation
Ability to communicate ideas and benefits
Experience of working within multi-aspect teams across LoBs and engineering disciplines Internal and external stakeholders
Commercial acumen; ability to drive cost effective solutions by close working with LoB stakeholders, procurement agents and vendors
