R-2569 Manager Database - Operations (Open)

Primary Location


Neustar is looking for a skilled individual to work in a highly dynamic environment providing management support for development through production level database technologies This role balances technical and people leadership with the ability to understand and drive data management to support overall organizational goals Neustar s environment consists of over 700 databases utilizing 8 different database technologies across 15+ business lines Database technologies include Oracle, MySQL, SQL*Server, Mongo, Postgres, GreenPlum, AreoSpike and Kafka


  • Plan, direct and coordinate daily activities of a department/group/team

  • Maintains database results by setting and enforcing standards and controls

  • Secures database by developing policies, procedures, and controls

  • Act as a resource for database administrators on policies, procedures and technical issues

  • Change Management reviews and approvals

  • Lead efforts in reporting and documentation related to database activities, including reporting on defined monthly KPIs

  • Crisis Management

  • Identify potential shortcomings within the organization s data infrastructure, including areas of potential data loss or unauthorized access and rectify

  • Manage the database administration departments daily operation

  • Enact plans for data backup activities, schedules and removal of obsolete data

  • Ensure business line service level agreements, service level commitments, operational level agreements are met

  • Ensure databases are architected to meet recovery time objectives and recovery point objectives are met

  • Driving process automation

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations

  • Escalation for on-call support responding to incidents and incident bridges

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5+ years experience in infrastructure technology roles and 3+ years in a team management role

  • Bachelor s degree or better in Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline

  • 3+ years experience in administration and support of Oracle Enterprise RDBMS

  • 3+ years operating knowledge of various UNIX environments, specifically RedHat and CentOS

  • Experience leading Tier 1 and Tier 2 operations

  • Experience driving and presenting root cause analysis and error correction from operational events to senior management

  • Experience representing your team/technical area to peers, and senior leadership

  • Strong interpersonal skills at all levels of management and ability to motivate employees/teams to apply skills and techniques to solve dynamic problems; excellent teamwork skills

  • Ability to weigh various suggested technical solutions against the original business needs and choose the most cost-effective solution

  • Ability to quickly learn and manage other database technologies including Postgres, MySQL, SQL*Server, Mongo, AreoSpike and Kafka

  • Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong project management skills

  • Self-driven, detail oriented, excellent analytical skills, a strong team player who works well with immediate and extended team, and consistently puts the team above oneself

  • Strong desire to innovate, ability to multitask, sense of ownership, and urgency

  • Ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision and keep up with a fast-moving environment via effective prioritization and time management

Physical and Other Requirements

  • Must be able to work in a 24x7 managers on call rotation environment, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events/needs

  • Travel to US based offices as needed

  • Experience dealing with internal customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure

  • English language proficiency

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in Agile management methodologies

  • Experience with ServiceNow

  • Experience with Jira and Confluence
