Overview

The Laboratory Chemist provides chemistry information, analytical methods, instrument troubleshooting and repair, and consulting to the refinery and supports specialized sample testing services for process stream monitoring and optimization, product certification, environmental compliance, and special projects

Position Details Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to


  • Functions as part of the Chemist Team supporting refinery testing services for process stream monitoring and optimization, product certification, environmental compliance, and special projects

  • Conducts training, consulting, maintenance and troubleshooting on test methods and instrumentation

  • Develops and implements testing methods, including selection and purchase of new equipment/instrumentation, training, quality control/assurance, documentation, maintenance & troubleshooting, and continuous improvement

  • Works with outside laboratories as needed to obtain testing or develop alternative methods

  • Advises Operations, Operations Coordination group, and Engineering on selecting appropriate testing methods/instrumentation and provides analytical assistance to these groups to help resolve process problems

  • Consults on new analytical instrumentation developments and their applicability to refinery laboratories

  • Participates in and contributes toward Laboratory Business Plan and short and long-term laboratory goals and initiatives

  • Provides testing and other non-specified work (eg project work), as assigned

  • Actively pursues ways to improve efficiency and reduce costs for Lab systems/procedures, etc




  • Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Natural Sciences, or Chemical, Biological or Environmental Engineering; OR In lieu of academic preparation, a minimum of five years experience in chemicals/refining analytical testing laboratory

  • Experience using statistical quality control tools and practices

  • Demonstrated strong mechanical skills and ability to use tools to maintain instrumentation

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate chemistry/technical information to audiences of varying technical background

  • Demonstrated excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills

  • Demonstrated teamwork, communication, planning/organizing, leadership skills, and strong commitment to safety and Chevron Way

  • Good work ethic and job performance
