Job Description:

There isnt a shortage of ideas for new products and services to develop; the trick is picking the right ones in which to invest This person will lead a cross-functional, collaborative team of empowered and accountable people whose mission is to develop new products and services that customers love and will transform the markets we serve The Innovation Manager must build a realistic vision of what success means and ensure that vision becomes a reality

Every idea for a new product or business model is really a series of untested hypotheses in need of proof The teams responsibility is to prove the hypothesis by designing and running experiments to build a live prototype to test with real customers This will include validating the value proposition, channel and technical feasibility Its a race to product market fit This process is commonly known as customer development or product discovery The objective is the same - iteratively build and test until the assumptions are validated to eliminate effort wasted on commercializing products that customers dont want


New business model discovery
Prioritize business model risks
Identify experiments to run to address business model risks
Identify people needed to run experiments and coordinate their work
Run experiments to address the riskiest assumption(s) to the business model
Create milestones (OKRs) for team to achieve in order to qualify for additional funding
Create overall project plan to achieve milestones
Track and report business model progress toward achieving milestones agreed upon with growth board
Create presentations for additional funding from growth board / financial stakeholders
Support partners with sales information, pilot requests and other general requests

Product vision and strategy
Owns product vision

Team leadership, goal establishment and measurement of progress
Develop deep knowledge of the business, understanding current business goals and stakeholders
Ensure product team can connect the product to its customers This includes monitoring customer feedback
Ensure product team can connect their work to business objective and outcomes
Develop and maintain product OKRs (objectives and key results) aligned with business objectives
Define product KPIs (key performance indicators) that lead product OKRs
Help to build internal innovation capabilities and champion a culture creativity and innovative thinking

Leads product discovery and experimentation (answers question should we build it)
Develop deep insights about the customer
Build deep knowledge of the data that enables us to understand behavior, measure progress, prove if ideas work and inform decisions
Identifies riskiest assumptions and key questions we must get answered
Develop and run experiments to get answers to key questions and address riskiest assumptions

Product requirements and prioritization of development work
Ensure new product or feature development is aligned with business strategy and goals
Responsible for customer, product and feature requirements
Assess and size the market opportunity as well as our right to win
Develop business cases that articulate our strategy for new products and product enhancements working with cross-functional team to refine product concept, evaluate its feasibility and communicate to key stakeholders
Prioritizes the work (new customer features, UX improvements, bugs, maintenance and cost optimization)
Make balanced judgments when faced with costs, timing, and resource tradeoffs
Consulted in technical decisions Understands what is being built and the tradeoffs

Project management
Manage new product development
Responsible for project management / timelines / reporting
Responsible for the business case / financials / capital approval
Unblocks the blockers (includes resources and communication)

Pricing and customer acquisition support
Sets pricing
Influence sales strategy
Influence marketing strategy (messaging, collateral needs, etc)

Deep knowledge of the industry
Understand relevant market and category trends to include disruptive technologies and legislative, agency and regulatory impacts
Monitor competitive activity, and assess competitive strategies, strengths, weaknesses and opportunities
Conduct market and customer research as needed

Team Responsibilities

Product Discovery / Search Phase
Prove we have found a burning problem lots of people want us to solve
Prove that solving this problem presents a huge opportunity
Prove we have found a solution that the target customer will buy
Prove the resulting business model is repeatable, scalable and meets the goals of the business

Delivery / Execution Phase
Build, launch and continuously deploy - doing what we said we were going to do and create happy, referenceable customers

Basic Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in Engineering or Business An MBA is a strong plus
Guided, led, and coached a cross functional/disciplinary team to develop and ship a new product
Experience in product discovery, designing experiments to test a hypothesis
Innovative, data-driven problem solver
Ability to travel (~10 PERCENT ) to lead or support customer research activities

Preferred Qualifications

3 years of increasing levels of product responsibility in consumer facing businesses, technology start-ups or modern product companies
Has shipped multiple products
Experience working with User Experience and User Research teams to run customer discovery and usability sessions
