Purpose of the Role

The role of the Fleet Mechanical Engineer is to investigate the performance of rail vehicles and establish systems, standards, maintenance regimes and solutions to continually improve the performance and condition of the vehicles

The role is also to effectively compliment, work with and support the V/Line Maintenance service division

Primary Responsibilities

- Responsible for the development, verification and application / introduction of vehicle related standards that would be relevant and applicable for specific types of rail vehicles
- Develop, implement and manage useful data collection systems relating to vehicle condition, performance, reliability etc
- Provide engineering support in the investigation and analysis of trends in vehicle performance (defects, reliability, availability etc)
- Apply Engineering principles to investigate vehicle trends and establish their actual cause
- Assist in the development of researched solutions to address vehicle performance trends with the aim of minimising or eliminating their reoccurrence Such solutions may involve changes to suppliers, design, maintenance regimes etc and will require close liaison with other functional departments such as production and supply management
- Perform cost benefit and risk analysis for proposed solutions to assess their viability within the constraints of the contract and budget
- Produce proposals in conjunction with the Senior Management team on relevant and cost-effective options for vehicle changes / modifications accompanied by the appropriate documentation such as risk analysis etc
- Respond as required to shop floor requests for assistance, safety case evaluations or fit to run concerns / decisions
- Provide technical support to procurement when sourcing new parts (new to the fleet or, fit-form-functional replacement of obsolete parts)
- Responsible for the development and implementation of overhaul intervals and overhaul specifications (scope of work) for major components based on results of risk analysis, specifications, vehicle condition (ie condition monitoring) and financial constraints
- Assist in the continuous review of both light and heavy maintenance regimes with view to balancing exams, optimising workflow, and reducing maintenance costs while satisfying safety requirements and minimising risk
- Responsible for the ongoing assessment and analysis of vehicle condition to ensure that the systems and appropriate actions are in place to maintain contractual compliance
- Work with the Engineering department to provide technical reports (internal and external), as required on a varying range of topics
- Provide monthly reports to management on vehicle related issues and initiatives
- Develop, review and modify work instructions, procedures etc
- Implementation and adherence to all corporate policies including OH&S and Quality
- Establish and maintain a harmonious working environment in which all staff, associates, suppliers and customers are encouraged to participate in decision making
- Provide on-call / after-hours support to Production on an as required basis

Qualifications

Key Requirements

- University qualified Engineer (ie Mechanical) with minimum 5-8 years of relevant work experience
- Service, design and/or commissioning experience, preferably on rail vehicles
- understanding of mechanical and pneumatic systems
- Experience with the requirements of AS4100 and AS1554
- Some formal design and calculation ability
- A general level of fault finding and troubleshooting experience in electrical and pneumatic / hydraulic systems
- Application of preventative maintenance strategies based on failure predictions and other statistical tools
- Preparation of standards, maintenance schedules, maintenance instructions, fault reports and other documents
- Some experience and understanding of the interface between electrical, mechanical and pneumatic equipment on rail vehicles
- Hazard and safety analysis
- Understanding of requirements of AS4292
- Be able to read and understand engineering and schematic drawings, sketches etc
- Data collection and statistical skills
- Understanding and experience in performing risk and cost benefit analysis
- Sound knowledge and ability in project and performance management
- Proficient in use of Microsoft applications in particular MS Excel
