Director - Post Credit Approval Review - Special Assets

Capital Ones Policy & Innovation (P&I) team, housed within the Credit Risk and Analytics (CR&A) division, is responsible for Risk Governance, Risk Appetite, Policy and Assurance Exam Management activities for Credit Risk in the Commercial Bank and Market and Liquidity Risk at the Enterprise level The teams contribution is critical in providing a foundation for sound credit risk management practices, complying with internal policies and regulations and exhibiting the overall culture of Capital One

This is a newly created position in Commercial Credit Risk & Analytics (CR&A) for an Individual reviewing Rating Assignments assigned by Special Asset Credit Officers and other Credit Officers, in addition to reviewing Credit Actions versions Credit Policy and Underwriting Criteria The Individual will possess deep credit risk assessment, credit policy, and OCC regulatory expertise S/he will have the self-confidence, intellectual horsepower, and earned credibility required to effectively challenge and ensure regulatory compliant risk ratings, approve and ensure consistency in FAS 114 impairment analysis and approve enterprise valuation drivers and collateral values for loans Additionally, S/he will help drive consistency in assessing risks and documentation

The Individual will be a key teammate with excellent communication and relationship building skills for interactions with internal and external stakeholders These stakeholders include Credit Officers, Special Assets Officers, Credit Review, Credit Policy Officers, Enterprise Valuation experts, Audit and business unit leaders and counterparts, as well as external regulators (OCC and FRB) Functional Responsibilities include

Ensure effective credible challenge and approve risk ratings for all Substandard and worse rated loans and consult on Special Mention rated loans for the C&I and Commercial Real Estate portfolios Be sought out internally as the leading Subject Matter Expert (SME) on regulatory risk rating classifications and provide guidance and periodic training on regulatory risk ratings

Evaluate Credit Transactions versus Credit Policies and Underwriting Standards to ensure analysis and rationale aligns with requirements and is supported with appropriate rationale

Play a key leadership role in our quarterly governance process for FAS 114 impairment analysis Validate and approve the correct sizing of any impairment and the reasonableness of valuation assumptions and methodologies Ensure consistency across workout officers and adherence to Accounting and Regulatory guidelines

Partner with the CR&A Enterprise Valuation Group to ensure flawless execution of valuation policies and procedures for adversely classified loans and determine split risk ratings when necessary

Stay current on regulatory changes and expectations impacting the loan portfolio including the criticized portion Evaluate the impact of regulatory changes and collaborate with the Credit Policy and Innovation team to ensure processes and policies are in compliance with regulatory expectations

Document and socialize best practices and be the culture champion for sharing lessons learned

The Ideal candidate will have

The candidate must have extensive experience in regulatory risk ratings, credit accounting, distressed borrower restructurings and workouts, and leveraged lending including

Experience in solving for and authoring Credit Policies with a Super Regional or Money Center bank

Experience in evaluating credit risk and valuing criticized and distressed loans

Experience in underwriting C&I sub-investment grade like loans and Commercial Real Estate loans

Commercial Underwriting/portfolio management and/or commercial loan workout experience

Basic Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business

At least 5 years of commercial loan underwriting experience in an OCC regulated environment

At least 2 years of commercial loan workout experience

Preferred Qualifications


At least 10 years of commercial lending/underwriting experience in an OCC regulated environment

At least 3 years of experience as a bank examiner or in a Credit Review function in an OCC regulated bank
