Job Description

The Control System Engineer is responsible for process control system performance and technical assurance for assigned operating units The Control Systems Engineer enables operations to efficiently and safely control operating units using the process control system tools and equipment including field instrumentation, DCS hardware, baselayer controls, complex controls, and Instrumented Protective Function (IPFs) systems The Control Systems Engineer serves as the focal point for control system technical assurance for all matters relating to process controls for their production team The Olefins Control system Engineer works on the Yokogawa DCS platform


Monitors and improves process control systems performance

Provides technical assurance of process control systems for assigned areas of responsibility

Applies functional working knowledge of

Control systems applications and hardware

Process operation and theory

Shell Work Processes MTA (Mitigate Threats to Availability), ESP (Ensure Safe Production, RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance, IPF (Instrumented Protective Function), MOC (Management of Change)

Operational goals and constraints

ESP variables

Control Systems limitations and capabilities

Impact on safety and the environment

Interrelationship with other units in the plant

Major economic variables and how they impact plant profitability

Process control systems including Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Instrumented Protective Functions (IPF), General & Specialty Field Instrumentation, Online Analyzers, Process Computers & Scanning hardware, Process Data Historian, Data Visualization & Trending Tools, Alarm Management Processes, PLCs and Information Systems


Ensures full compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental and Technical Standards/Procedures/Orders for automation and control system designs

Investigates Instrumented Protective Function (IPF) system events and ensures the IPF systems function as designed and identifies and improves system bad actors

Implements and reviews performance of control systems designed to control risks identified by risk management studies

Serves as technical assurance coordinator for Plant Changes/Management of Change (MOC)

Updates Process Safety Management (PSM) documentation as necessary (IPF documentation)

Participates in technical and safety reviews (eg HAZOPs) and post event reviews (eg incident investigations, etc)

Ensures process control work does not adversely impact other processes, safety, environment, or reliability

Technical Assurance

Provides technical assurance of process control systems for assigned areas of responsibility

Approves Management of Change (MOC) for activities in which they are a key resource

Ensures control systems comply with applicable corporate, safety, and environmental standards (EGGS, DEPS, industry standards, State and Federal regulations, etc)

Ensures process control strategy and standards are implemented consistently throughout the site

Support Activities

Supports maintenance inspectors in analyzing complex or difficult problems associated with control systems as escalated by the maintenance work process

Identifies opportunities for improving control systems via Proactive Technical Monitoring using tools such as MDPro, in alignment with HSSE, reliability and cost improvement goals

Develops and implements engineered solutions to control system problems outside of the maintenance work process

Develops Investment Proposals (IPs) and concept designs for additions or modifications to control systems

Maintains BPCS, APC and Complex Control strategies at levels necessary to achieve optimum unit performance (includes tuning, testing and troubleshooting)

Organizes technical training for control systems applications for affected personnel

Supports projects, changes, or on-going operational needs to support run and maintain objectives

Provides input to T/A planning control document, scope of work, and plans for execution

Participates in developing and updating the Process Control Systems 5-year plan (capital, infrastructure upgrades, etc)

Provides leadership in assigned areas to achieve technical excellence, reliability improvements and cost leadership performance

Participates in ESP Alarm Review Meetings with technical and operation resources to deliver lower alarm rates


Legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Bachelors degree is required; preferably in Chemicals, Engineering or other related discipline
Minimum five (5) years prior experience similar role is essential
Previous Process Control Design experience for Projects and Production Unit Changes (MOCs) is a plus
Technical experience in Yokogawa & Fieldbus Knowledge preferred
Previous experience with supporting a production unit Turnaround is an advantage
Awareness of safety reviews (PHA, HEMP-LOPA, etc)
Awareness of corporate policies and industry standards such as EGGS and DEPS
Awareness of IPF and Instrumented Safety Systems
Demonstrated analytical and decision making skills
Ability to cope with a variety of issues and situations
Able to work with diverse groups
Good organizational and planning skills (able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously)
