This is an exciting opportunity to join the Corporate Legal - Litigation & Investigations Team in a role that combines personal responsibility for caseloads along with the chance to work in a high performing team

As one of BTs commercial disputes lawyers, the role-holder will form part of the team that provides expert legal advice and management of commercial disputes in every part of BT Group Plc
The team is focussed on the most strategically and reputationally significant contentious matters across the BT Group As such it is a key advisor to senior management in the Group and across all CFUs It also has a supervisory and governance role for other areas of BT Group where disputes work is handled, often acting as a guide or sounding board
The team also conducts and supports internal-facing corporate investigations as well as handling external-facing matters involving criminal law and regulation
The successful candidate will own and directly manage a portfolio cases and will work on larger disputes and investigations work by supporting senior lawyers and/or the Legal Director for Litigation

What youll be doing

Disputes Management & Litigation

Responsible for the provision and/or procurement of legal support for BTs Customer Facing Units in their dispute risks and litigation needs
Giving advice at pre-dispute phase on best strategy to avoid or mitigate litigation risks
Assessing cases at pre-dispute stage to minimise BT exposure and effectively resolve the matter
Assisting in scoping and costing where external counsel is engaged
Instructing and managing engagement with external counsel including assessing, communicating and helping to implement external advice
Manage documents and compliance with E-Disclosure / Document holds
Producing written legal advice and presenting advice to key stakeholders
Managing the procedural aspects of litigation in accordance with the Civil Procedure Rules
Assisting with internal reporting of cases for the purposes of financial provisions, risk registers and the Group annual reports
Providing feedback on themes and lessons learned to avoid reoccurrence of the same dispute risks

The team is part of Corporate Legal and so the role holder may also be expected to be involved in the provision of advice in relation to related legal issues covered by some of the other legal teams within Corporate Legal (eg support to employment law team)

Corporate Investigations

Assisting in the provision or procurement of legal support for issues relating to internal investigations in the UK and across the BT Group worldwide
Provide legal advice and engagement as required for matters being reported up to Board ExCo level and/or in relation to external communications in respect of investigations and some criminal law matters (working with external counsel - experience in criminal law not essential), including engaging directly with senior stakeholders
Providing legal support to BT Compliance function on anti-bribery and corruption, anti-money laundering, sanctions, and other matters as required

You will be identifying (i) issues that may cause BT to be in breach of any applicable law, regulation, BT policy or contract/deed and (ii) all legal and relevant policies, and the associated governance, compliance and regulatory BT processes used to manage any issues identified
You will work effectively with external providers, so you will need to be adept at ensuring the most cost-effective and efficient way of delivering advice and services commensurate with the risk
You will need to stay up to date with industry and legal developments to identify and proactively address risks, trends and opportunities

Key Skills

Experience of commercial litigation Qualification in England and Wales as a practising solicitor or barrister, or non-UK equivalent practising rights and practical experience in commercial litigation as a minimum ideally in relation to complex, larger value commercial matters exceeding 1m potential liability
Corporate investigations ideally some experience in corporate investigations, or with equivalent skill sets (perhaps within a litigation or regulatory context), including familiarity with witness statements, legal privilege issues and cross-border data protection /confidentiality issues Experience with advising, or assisting with advice at board level a benefit
Stakeholder engagement ability to engage with stakeholders at very senior level
Strong ability to use initiative, organisation, and work independently much of the work will be varied/atypical, without volume litigation processes The role requires common sense, an ability to get to grips with commercial dynamics in unfamiliar subject-matter and juggle multiple tasks
Ability to work as part of a small team of lawyers and to appreciate and react quickly to the needs of the wider team in the business
Identifying and proactively addressing relevant legal issues, showing strong communication skills to provide effective and pragmatic advice, identifying risks and trends

Mandatory

3 years PQE qualified lawyer in England and Wales, or qualified by experience and/or with a recognised professional qualification
Experience in, and the ability to handle, complex commercial disputes
Knowledge and experience of complying with the Civil Procedure Rules

Preferred

Some experience gained in private practise or in-house in the management and running of internal investigations either as a standalone investigation or as part of a piece of litigation
Experience in telecoms and/or other regulated sectors
Experience of making presentations on legal issues to senior clients/stakeholders
