Position Summary

As Chief Operating Officer, you will lead the vision for a strong, safe and stable organizational backbone that enables us to reach our ambitious organizational goals You will lead us to greater organizational efficiency, effective financial performance and statutory compliance, and build a strong technological backbone You will lead high-level, cross-cutting strategic projects across Teach For India and directly manage critical functions such as Technology, Finance, Legal Affairs, and Administration Your work as COO will enable Teach For India to grow into an enduring institution safe, caring and high-performing

Directly manage our Finance team of five (including three direct reports), fostering a professional development environment that ensures team member growth, engagement, and impact
Ensure seamless financial operations
Oversee all financial planning processes, in partnership with the head of Finance
Oversee external audit processes in partnership with the Controller
Serve as the lead liaison to the Boards Finance & Audit Committee and present financial results to the Board
The final responsibility for high-quality financial planning and analysis activities that equip the management team and the Board to make informed strategic decisions

Legal and risk management

Supported by Teach For Indias lawyers and a part-time external counsel, oversee legal activities and compliance including adherence to workplace, school relations, data, child protection, media and public relations policies
Review and refresh these periodically based on inputs from the legal experts and our teams on the ground, put in place systems for monitoring adherence to these and recourse during non-adherence
Ensure adherence to legal and contractual commitments to our donors and partners
Highlight compliance quality and risks periodically to the management team and the Board
In partnership with our internal audit partner, conduct high-quality internal audits, identify changes and reinforcements required, and follow through the same with structured reporting to the concerned teams, management, and the Board


Support the head of technology in aligning the organizational technology landscape and strategy with the diverse organizational needs
Perform periodic Return on Investment (ROI) analysis of technology, and recommend changes if any
Recommend forward looking user centric digital strategies that would enable improved delivery of impact on the ground
Ensure zero or minimal disruption in ongoing maintenance aspects by supporting the head of technology in identifying and monitoring key metrics and levers of reliability and quality


Manage the Head of Administration to ensure that staff are able to work productively across our locations
Lead a team focused on implementing efficient and employee friendly travel and administrative policies including overseas and domestic travel, boarding and lodging, retreats etc
Help the team structure its work in support of our communication team in implementing events throughout the year Teach For India designs and implements several medium to large scale events every year Participant experience and quality requirements demand meticulous execution by our Administration team

Management of strategic projects

Working directly with the CEO, you will identify and execute high-impact cross-team strategic projects In the past, such projects have included an assessment of existing staff and Fellow policies, finding the right partners who can transform Teach For Indias support functions such as Finance and Communications and so on

Minimum Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

Prior experience with leading/transforming administrative and operational functions in an executive/advisory capacity
Good understanding of and experience in leading service/support functions to serve other stakeholders in an organization
Experience in setting up systems and processes in order to help an organization build a robust foundation and scale
The ability to think strategically so as to conceptualize multiple approaches to solving a problem and drawing out a clear roadmap with roles and responsibilities
The ability to build strong relationships and navigate complexity by investing and influencing others
Strong communication skills that will enable you to deliver compelling messages through oral and written medium to diverse stakeholders
People management skills so as to articulate a team vision and manage and coach individuals to consistently superior outcomes
Operational management to enabling the setting up of systems and processes to allocate resources efficiently

Preferred Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

A Bachelors or a Masters Degree in any field
8 years of relevant work experience
Experience of driving operational/technological change end-to-end in a medium-sized organization
Acquaintance with enterprise technology and tools in medium sized organizations
Ability to be resourceful and entrepreneurial in the face of uncertainty
Strong focus on building excellence and depth in this role
Strong interest in operations
Previous experience managing large projects and teams to successful outcomes
