The Morgan Stanley Baltimore office is a critical component of the Firm`s Global footprint and has 1,400 employees that provide support and services to the Investment Banking, Securities, Investment Management and Wealth Management Businesses

Our office at Thames Street Wharf is located in the heart of Baltimores Inner Harbor Additionally, the Firm recently expanded downtown and occupies two floors at 100 South Charles in the new, up and coming neighborhood of Harbor Point, adjacent to historic Fells Point

Operational Risk Department as the second line of defense works with the business units and control groups to help ensure Morgan Stanley has a transparent, consistent and comprehensive framework and program for managing operational risk

Operational Risk is the risk of financial loss or other potential damage to the firms reputation due to inadequate controls or failed internal processes through people or systems, or from external events This group defines the framework, standards and governance for Operational Risk for the Firm, and implements and monitors the company-wide operational risk program

ORD Data Management is a new team focusing on the governance and management of data, specifically the governance of data usage, the creation of data and its implied relationships, and authoritative sources of data The group will also define the data strategy to be able to support the answering of business risk, regulatory and control questions, while maintaining a supportable and scalable risk management program within the ORD framework

The Operational Risk Department is seeking an Associate to contribute to a number of innovative projects utilizing semantics, natural language processing, machine learning, and other cutting edge technological approaches This is an opportunity to learn about and contribute to the next generation of risk technology

This is essential because in todays increasingly interconnected business environment, Operational Risk cannot be thoroughly assessed or managed without a holistic view of both individual data points and complex interdependencies For example, a person cannot thoroughly understand the risks associated with a process or application without understanding process dependencies, the broader technology ecosystem in which a given application operates, and relationships between processes and applications In most cases, the volumes of data are such that manually performing this type of assessment is not feasible or scalable, and hence smarter technology is needed to assist

The selected candidate would fill a key role and have the opportunity to work closely with global business process owners, technology service providers, and key stakeholders across the Firm

The primary responsibilities of the role include

Lead the documentation, tracking, and management of use cases and specific requirements for ORD Data Management projects Requirements will cover such areas as user interfaces and workflows, data management, and application performance and availability

Act as a primary author of ontology/data model modifications and additions using applications such as Protg, while taking care to adhere to established standards Work with ORD stakeholders to understand and model the central concepts and relationships in their domain

Enhance data quality by validating mappings between existing data sources and new semantic repositories, as well as between data sources and ontologies/data models Implement and report results of data validation checks using established standards and queries written in the SPARQL Protocol and RDF Query Language Manage validation queries and further automate the data validation process

Lead user acceptance testing of semantic applications to identify issues and verify that requirements are satisfied prior to release

Develop Machine Learning algorithms and customized rules to tune the Natural Language Processing pipeline built on top of ORDs Data Management infrastructure

Keep the ORD Data Management team informed about relevant technical standards, such as the Resource Description Framework (RDF) and the Web Ontology Language (OWL)

The ideal candidate would have

At least 4-8 years of experience within the financial services industry, or similar industries subject to comparable regulatory and legal considerations

An understanding of individual Operational Risk core areas, and the ability to understand how Operational Risk areas intersect If not an understanding of Operational Risk specifically, than at least a background in a related discipline, such as Operations, Finance, Compliance or another Risk stripe

Strong technical experience in data architecture or modeling is preferred Data science, business intelligence, data or information governance/management, information systems, and technology project management experience will also be considered

Strong programming skills, which will be used to automate certain processes (such as data validation) as well as to craft SPARQL queries, Machine Learning algorithms, and customized Natural Language Processing rules

Experience managing or working on agile development projects, with an understanding of core development process functions such as requirements development, recurring prioritization and feedback, and user acceptance testing

Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team and delegate tasks

Must be a self-starter and highly organized; attention to detail a must

Excellent analytical skills required

Strong written and verbal communication skills
