Project Brief
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for majority of all deaths in India The care for NCDs in India is predominantly born out-of-pocket with some financial protection from hospitalization through government insurance schemes For these reasons, individuals underutilize services for NCD care and management, leading to an escalation of disease, emergency health incidents, and increased spending on hospitalizations Without robust preventive and primary care, the rising burden of NCDs may render many of the tertiary care schemes financially unsustainable As most patients access outpatient care from private healthcare providers, it seems intuitive that public-private engagement modelsunder which the health services are financed by the public sector and provided by the private sector-- can effectively address the rising NCD burden
